American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education Level 1:
Decision Making in Avalanche Terrain
AIARE Level 1 is traditionally a 3 day/24 hour introduction to avalanche hazard management focusing on creating options and making informed decisions for travel in avalanche terrain.
You will: develop a plan for travel in avalanche terrain
hone your ability to identify avalanche terrain
utilize a decision making framework to reduce your risk
practice strategic methods for companion rescue.
We are excited to be participating in a pilot program that adds an online component to your AIARE I course, freeing up more time to spend in the field practicing skills. Students enrolling in the “Blended Learning AIARE I” will receive an additional 8 hours of self-directed online instruction. This additional instruction will give students a head start on understanding avalanche terminology, weather and avalanche forecasts and skills needed for safe travel in the backcountry, enabling them to take the most from their class experience.
This course meets the American Avalanche Association guidelines for Level 1.
All backcountry travelers will benefit from this course
