Tangle Lakes / Delta River users needed for survey

The Bureau of Land Management is revising its 1983 plan for the Tangle lakes and Delta River (upstream of Black Rapids). To help with this, we are conducting a survey of boaters and ATV users this winter.

The survey will have questions about…
• your trips on the river / lakes
• your reasons for taking trips
• crowding, litter, and other impacts
• acceptable levels of camp impacts
• your opinions about management options

We will send the survey to names collected from registration boxes at the put-ins over the past four years. Because not everyone registers their trips, we are also collecting boaters from paddling clubs, lodges, and boating stores or other sources (like this request). If you have taken a trip on the Delta River or Tangle Lakes, you can help. We want to hear from you even if (1) you have only taken one trip on the river; (2) it has been several years since you visited; or (3) you only take day trips on the lakes.

To receive a survey, send your name and mailing address to dougwhit@alaska.net by October 15, 2004. Alternatively, you can call Doug Whittaker at (907) 346 – 3769.

Hi Delta, This is Leah Harmon from the produce truck that was by Jump'n Java and the BBQ Pit. I made it to the web page, my self to day. We want to thank the people here for letting us be a part of your community this past week. We enjoyed your many stories and are glad we got to meet you. We plan to come back again next year. Cranes
Anyone who has looked up toward the sky recently may have noticed large numbers of sandhill cranes migrating overhead. During a crane study conducted in the Delta Junction area during pipeline construction days, researchers estimated that two-thirds of the world population of 600,000 lesser sandhill cranes migrated through the Delta Junction area each spring and fall. After migrating through the Tanana Valley in the fall, the birds continue south to the southwestern U.S. and Mexico. On their northward migration in the spring, many birds continue across Alaska to nest in Siberia. Young of the year birds tend to have more brownish-red on their plumage such as the lead bird in the attached photo, and also have a call described as "tweer" and reminds me of a whistle. Adults tend to be more solid gray, such as the bird in the lower right of the photo and their call has been described as a rolling bugle, which many of us Deltoids are
probably familiar with. The agricultural farm lands in the Delta area provide an important food source for birds during migration. Many birds will fend on grain in the fields and then roast overnight on the Delta and Tanana River beds.

Fresh Produce for Sale

A couple from Montana, Wayne and Leah Harman, have brought 1000 cases of fresh produce from the Yakima Valley. They will be located next to Jumpin' Java, across from the Presbyterian Church for the next five or six days.

John Henry peaches, field-grown tomatoes, Bartlett pears, McIntosh, Golden Delicious and Gala apples, Anaheim and Jalapeno peppers.

The Delta Huskies played a historic football game Wednesday night the team hosted the Eielson Ravens JV team for the first home game in Delta's
football history. Several hundred enthusiastic fans watched they the Huskies beat the Ravens 36-16. The Huskies next home game will be Saturday,
Sept. 16 when they will host Ketchikan.

Let’s Eradicate Breast Cancer

Deseree Baker, a new member to the Delta Junction community is participating in the Breast Cancer 3 Day in Los Angeles, California. She will be walking 20 miles per day for three days for a total of 60 miles. The course goes from Huntington Beach to Santa Monica, California. As a participant she must raise $2000.00 that will benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation and the National Philanthropic Trust whose mission is to eradicate breast cancer through research, awareness and prevention.

She and members of the Forget-Me-Knot quilters’ guild here in Delta Jct., have created a beautiful quilt to be raffled. The 90 X 108 inch Double Irish Chain quilt will be on display at the Wells Fargo Bank in Delta Junction, Alaska. Tickets are available for $5 each or 5 for $20 and can be purchased at Granite View Sports, Busy Bee Office Supply, Calico Cow and Loving Stitches.

Donations are greatly appreciated, as they will help Deseree reach and hopefully surpass her goal. All proceeds are contributed to the 3-Day event. The Drawing for the quilt will be Monday, September 27, 2004 at The Coffee Club at 6pm. Winner does not need to be present to win.

ACS to provide continuing
Internet service to Delta Junction

Delta Junction residents who have been using WildAK.net as their internet service provider will be able to make a seamless transition to ACS Internet with a free month of service, according to ACS representative Mary Ann Pease. Effective immediately, ACS will be the replacement provider for all WildAK internet dial up accounts that choose to continue with them.

Pease told the Delta News Web that WildAk subscribers should "be assured, although your provider is changing, you’ll experience no interruption of service. We’re confident you’ll enjoy your service with ACS – you’ll receive your monthly service for a lower price, you’ll get excellent customer service when you need it, free technical support, and more integrated services, such as email filtering for those pesky sales pitches that flood your mailbox."

Almost simultaneously with the transition of WildAK accounts to ACS, Delta residents are being offered two additional alternatives for internet service. Arctic Fox Safety Supply announced this week that it will be offering dialup service starting in mid September, with a domain name of 99737.com. Wireless Delta has been taking reservations for high speed wireless internet service for months, and has recently begun making installations in the community.

The presence of these other Internet Service Providers mean that Delta residents can choose between two dialup internet providers and a high speed wireless provider. Dialup speeds run at 52 kb or below; wireless runs between 256 kb and 5,000 kb depending on the level of service contracted for. Dialup can be used by anyone with existing telephone service. Wireless service requires the installation of additional equipment.

Pease said that ACS is offering customers transitioning from WildAK the first month of dialup internet service for free as a gesture of welcome. "You will not see any charges for ACS Dialup Internet Services on your September bill," she told us. Service will cost $29 per month.

In addition to dialup service, ACS customers will be able to use up to 10 mb of server space for web pages.

ACS will be contacting WildAK subscribers by telephone or mail this month. Customer care can be reached at 1-800-478-7121 and technical support at 1-888-690-1930.

My wife and I would like to thank this community for the enjoyable 5 years we had in providing the Delta/Greely area with internet service. Due to an unforeseeable turn of events that we cannot discuss due to a non-disclosure agreement, we will no longer be providing this valuable service to the area. ACS will be taking care of the internet needs of the town. We realize this may be an inconvenience to some but, unfortunately we have no control over the matter.

We had to do what was best for our family and our customers. Thank you for your patronage and helping WildAlaska grow to its full potential.

Also WildAlaska is turning over the domain wildak.net to ACS as of our conversation with ACS today. Therefore there should be no change of email addresses, all web sites should continue exactly as they are and the only difference anyone will notice will be that instead of paying WildAlaska they will pay ACS directly.

Issac Parker Isaac Parker - Delta Junction resident has been working far from home and family these past two years. His work and travel experiences have taken him as far away as New Zealand and the South Pole, as well as other regions of the state. In Sitka this summer, Issac enjoyed hunting and sport fishing on his days off from work with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. NEW INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER

Arctic Fox Safety & Supply announced on September 2 that it would be providing an alternative for dial up internet service in Delta Junction. The ISP will use the domain name 99737.com

99737.com will be accessible to anyone with a telephone modem. Speeds will range up to 52 kb, depending on connection quality, modem type and other factors.

The new ISP should be up and running by September 15, according to Steve Fields. For information about subscribing, call 895-2057.

Delta News Web -- September 2, 2004

WildAK.net Discontinues Service to Delta area

In a short email message dated early Monday, August 30, WildAK.net announced that it would no longer be serving the Delta Junction community as of 1 September 2004. The note said “For uninterrupted internet service please call 1-888-690-1930 (ACS Customer Service) to make your payment arrangements.”

Late in the day on August 30, ACS Alaska notified the Delta News Web that they were working on the problem. They said the service will continue as normal and that service should not be interrupted. They will be notifying all WildAK clients in the next few days with information about the changes that will be taking place.

Also in late afternoon Robert Anderson, owner of WildAK.net communicated with Delta News Web staff. He provided a letter of explanation via email. It is reproduced below.

Saturday, August 21 was the first “Who could eat the most hamburgers in 2 minutes” sponsored by the Drive In, owners John and Linda Sloan.
