Delta/Clearwater Dart League Update
I would like to remind dart players that the first general
membership meeting of the season is on Sunday, September 21st at
6:00 p.m. at the Alaskan Steakhouse.
Election of a new secretary/treasure and team roster turn-in
are priorities on the agenda. Team captains should also have
sponsorship fees available to turn in with their rosters.
Rob Bevard has expressed an interest in being
secretary/treasure. He will have to be nominated for the office
and voted on. It is important to have a good turnout.
Other agenda items include scheduling, and any other business
brought befor the membership. League play will begin on 2 October.
If you have any questions or input, please call Joe Crandall at
895-4059.

Making the Delta News Web Your “Wake Up” Page
Many people around the Delta community set their
web browser to “wake up” on
the Delta News Web. In other words, when they log on to the `net,
the Delta
News Web is the first page they go to.
We have designed it to be useful as a start page for the
community. It has
weather, search links, web based email, community events, for sale
items, a
picture, and even more items and links as one digs further down
the page.
By the way, in case you haven’t tried the search box, it’s easy.
Instead of
navigating to Google, Yahoo, MSN or another search engine, just
type your
search word or phrase in the box, select your search engine, and
click the
“search” button. You will get the results from the search engine
as usual.
OK….back to the “wake up page.” It really is easy to set your
computer to
wake up on the Delta News Web. It’s also easy to change it to
something
else later if you want. Here are the steps:
1. Click on the “tools” menu at the top of the browser window
2. Click next on “Internet Options” A dialog box opens that shows
“You can
change which page to use for your home page”
3. This should be showing in the box: http://www.deltanewsweb.com/
If it
isn’t you can copy and paste it
4. Click “Use Current”
5. Click “OK”
That’s all there is to it. To change it later, just navigate to
the page
you want to use for a home page and go through the same steps
there.

OPEN LETTER TO THE COMMUNITY
To Delta Junction City residents,
I have been the elected official for seat “D” on the city counsel
for the last two years. Circumstances in my private life have
caused a move out of the city limits and I have to give up my seat
on the city counsel. I would like you all to know that it has been
my pleasure to be a part of your city government. When I ran for
seat “D” two years ago it was to see what exactly went on with the
city government. It has been a real eye opener these last two
years. Things are not as they seem at times and there is more
going on than what is visible. I would like to point out that your
city council members are not paid employees but volunteers. This
community is blessed by the number of volunteers on the counsel
and especially in Fire and EMT squads.
I would like to invite all of you to run for the open seats
currently available, and I would also like to invite more of the
community to attend the two monthly meetings on the first and
third Tuesdays of the month. It is a shame that with all the
perceived problems that some community members think our town has
there is not a better showing of these concerned individuals at
the meetings.
We have a great city and community that has some exciting times
coming ahead. I again encourage you to come to meetings whether
you are in the city limits or not and for those in the city limits
I encourage you again to run for a seat on the counsel.
Sincerely, Henry Summers - August 30, 2003

LABOR
DAY - WHY DO WE CELEBRATE IT
On September 5, 1882 the first Labor Day parade
was held in New York City. Twenty thousand workers marched in a
parade up Broadway. They carried banners that read "LABOR CREATES
ALL WEALTH," and "EIGHT HOURS FOR WORK, EIGHT HOURS FOR REST,
EIGHT HOURS FOR RECREATION!" After the parade there were picnics
all around the city. Workers and celebrants ate Irish stew,
homemade bread and apple pie. At night, fireworks were set off.
Within the next few years, the idea spread from coast to coast,
and all states celebrated Labor Day. In 1894, Congress voted it a
federal holiday.
Today we celebrate Labor Day with a little less fanfare on the
first Monday of September. Some cities have parades and community
picnics. Many politicians "kick off' their political campaigns by
holding rallies on the holiday. Most Americans consider Labor Day
the end of the summer, and the beaches and other popular resort
areas are packed with people enjoying one last three-day weekend.

World Renown Scientists and
Geologists Gather on the Loop!
Excitement, debate, and evaluation were all a part
of a gathering of world renowned scientists, doctors, and
professors of geology.
Hosted at TLC Inn, (Tanana Loop Country Inn), the members of USGS
(United States Geological Survey), SESAC( Scientific Earthquake
Studies Advisory Committee) and Alyeska met for four days
concerning the earthquake sustained last November, it's impact
upon the pipeline, the safety measures that had been applied, and
the performance thereof.
Members of the original team who were involved in the early 70's
as the pipeline was being developed were excited to return and
observe the "1900" zone where the pipeline crosses the Denali
fault line. It was here specifically that it was determined the
greatest danger lay in possible damage to the pipeline during an
earthquake.
In order to protect the interest of the State of Alaska, saving it
from oil spills and great financial devastation, safety measures
were taken in this "slip zone" of 1900 feet. A safety measure
allowing for twenty feet of lateral movement was designed using
steel beams as sliders. An additional five feet was allowed in the
compression and extension that could take place vertically in the
pipeline itself.
Twenty years have passed since the initial design of the pipeline
and implementation of the safety measures designed by these
scientists. "Very seldom do we get the opportunity to design
something and then actually see how the design performed," said
Lloyd Cluff, who was picked by the Secretary of the Interior to
head up this conference.
The final report on the November '02 earthquake and it's impact
showed that the pipeline moved 18 feet laterally on the steel
sliders and 2 feet vertically, within the 1900 zone. All safety
measures engineered by these scientists performed as planned!
Not only was this important for the State of Alaska, but this also
provided solid information showing that scientifically it was
possible to identify potential problems and prepare for them
effectively. Members of SESAC and USGS then sat and wrote
their report for Congress. A wonderful time was had by all,
right here in Delta Junction...out on the loop!

Tuesday, September 16th will be the date for a
special “Back To School” event hosted by the Delta Chamber of
Commerce and the City of Delta Junction. An Ice Cream Social will
be held at the Delta Community Center from 6-8 pm. This will be an
excellent chance for new and long-time community members to
socialize with both the new and returning teachers and principals
who are working with the children this school year. It promises to
be a fun-filled evening with yummy ice cream treats, door prizes
and lots of calories! Come join the fun on September 16th. If you
or your business would like to help sponsor this event or donate a
door prize please contact, Martha Kimball, Activities Coordinator
at 895-2004 or Brenda Peterson, Executive Director, at 895-5068.
