This week at IGA in Delta, Gayle and Ed Larson welcomed the addition of a Boone and Crockett World Record Size Kodiak Brown Bear. The trophy belongs to Creig Sharp who was mauled by the bear while on a hunting trip in 1977. The bear's weight was estimated at 1400 lbs. and its hide squares 11 ft. 8 inches. From toes to ear tips he stands 8 ft. 10 inches in his new display case. To find out how the hunter became the "hunted," get a copy of
Alaska Bear Tales by Larry Kanuit and read the story "Bear in the Alder Patch." Kathy and Creig Sharp are shown with the bear in its new "home" at

Deltana Fair Assn. Annual Meeting: October 23
The Deltana Fair Association will have its annual membership meeting at 7 pm on Thursday, October 23, in the Conference Room on the Lower Level at Jarvis West, Mile 1420.5 Alaska Highway.
All Fair Association members are encouraged to attend and interested members of the public are welcome.
Membership dues, both renewals and new members, are due at this time. Reminder notices were sent to all members of record in early October.
DUES: $25 per year for Individuals, which includes one 3-day adult pass to the 2004 Deltana Fair; $50 for Businesses, which also includes a 3-day adult pass to the fair plus a 3-day reserved parking permit, and $250 for a Lifetime membership. All three classes of membership are entitled to one vote at Deltana Fair Association membership meetings.
Only those whose dues are paid current (as of October 23, 2003) will be eligible to vote at the annual meeting and only paid-up members are eligible to serve on the Board of Directors.
The agenda for Thursday's meeting will include reports on the 2003 Deltana Fair and discussion of plans for the 25th anniversary Deltana Fair, scheduled for August 20, 21 and 22, 2004.
ELECTION OF BOARD MEMBERS: There will also be an election for FIVE seats on the Board of Directors. Due to the lack of a quorum for annual meetings prior to the one held in early 2003, there was uncertainty about terms of office for those appointed to fill vacancies on the board during those years. Two board members (Ann Geise and Nancy King, Seats A & B) are in the first year of 3-year terms and their seats will be up again in 2005. Members will vote to elect five board members; the two who receive the highest number of votes will get a 3-year term and the next three highest will get one year terms. (Currently serving in Seats C, D, E, F and G, to be filled October 23, are Dawn
Grossmann, Loretta Schooley, Steve Fields, Gail Keaster, and Kelly
Keaster.)
Members, or those planning to become members, who would like to be nominated for the board are asked to please contact Dawn Grossmann at 895-1910.

While working along the Alaska Railroad this summer, I found out that there is an Alaska Railroad engine (number 4016) with the name, "Spirit of Delta Junction". The ARR has named engines for all their stops from Seward to Fairbanks. Supposedly, the railroad had originally planned to run tracks through the Delta area. Naturally, they decided to name one of their engines after Delta. However, tracks have not yet arrived in the Delta area, but the 4016 "Spirit of Delta Junction" remains. Perhaps it will one day pull the first load into our area!
