Before I begin giving thanks for soup day 2017 I need to give thanks to one of our consistent soup makers/helpers and apologize for her being omitted from the thank you list of years past. Thank you Laurie Franks for preparing your much sought after Halibut Chowder, it brings in loyal followers – year after year – thank you!
The 12th Annual Soup at the Sullivan was blowing breakers with an impressive 17 soups. The entry to the roadhouse was lined with Lou Ann’s “garden” treasures for the Bucket Drop fundraiser. Thank you Lou for bringing your whimsical creations to soup day!
Many thanks to friends of the Sullivan Roadhouse:
Savory soup preparers: Mary Ann Czmer, Sandy Dighton, Carol Dufendach, Lou Ann Fett, Debra Fortune, Laurie Franks, Ann Giese, Alison Heyman, Phil Kaspari, Natalie Kusz, Tony Lamanna, Christine Lemley, Christy Roden, and new to this year: Glen Crawford and Julia Phelan.
Best of bread, muffins, scones, and rolls provided by Katie Behrens, Mary Ann Czmer, Carol Dufendach, Courtney Durham, Kassie Farrar, Lou Ann Fett, Julia Phelan, Randi Priest, Ron Roden, and Linda Sloan – Lou Ann and Christy provided scrumptious honey butter and herb butter and Mary Ann created a wonderful pesto to serve with the breads.
Carol and Laurie were vigilant in monitoring the crocks, and keeping the serving areas tidy and stocked, sliced/served bread as they visited with friends. Mary Ann and Sandy were on hand to fill in as needed.
Mike Farrar treated guests to his delicious and nutritious rhubarb punch, it was a hit at the beverage table served by Christine and Christopher.
Vanilla ice cream topped by rhubarb sauce (thank you Ruby Hollembaek) and blueberry sauce (thank you Adeline Blum) to the thankful crowd. (we missed you this year Carol McNabb)!
Ken Farrow, delighted the roadhouse with his musical abilities playing in the main salon. Ken, you are a valued supporter of this event and we appreciate your efforts in getting the word out in addition to your kind words of encouragement.
Through out the day Julia Phelan guided her children, Christopher, Meghan, and Rene serving punch and ice cream and assisting in the clean up. Tiny Miss Deltana- Chloe Guthrie, Junior Miss Deltana- Rayne Fraley, Miss Preteen Deltana- Avenea Shestopalov, Miss Teen Deltana- Micah Hurst, Ms. Deltana- Amanda Rivera and daughter Liliana Rivera, also assisted with serving and clean up, it was especially nice to have these young families involved in this local annual event. Thank you for bringing your grace and enthusiasm to Soup at the Sullivan.
Set up and clean up thanks goes out to Carol D., Christine, Christy, Lou Ann,
Don, Laurie, Mike, Mary Ann, Mary Lou, Ron, and Bruce Grossmann. The process went smoothly thanks to the labors of these volunteers. Christine L. and Marjorie Martin put together the flower arrangement for the tables.
Further thanks goes to the Delta Chamber of Commerce for support of this event, the Delta News Web and the Delta Wind for promoting soup day on-line and in the paper.
Hearts were warmed by the aroma of soup and bread, along with the company of good friends – Thanks to all of you who attend this annual event, we are always astounded by the generosity of this community in supporting this Alaska treasure – the Sullivan Roadhouse Museum and gardens.
Sincerely, Christy Roden
P.S. Anyone wishing to help with activities at the roadhouse can contact one of the many volunteers listed above. Thank you.
