Joseph D. Brooks, 65, was on route to Anchorage and passed away of natural causes, on Tuesday September 6, 2016. He was found next to his vehicle at milepost 137 of the Glenn Highway at noon, and his body was transported to Anchorage. The timeline indicates that he crossed over quickly.
Joseph was born on September 16, 1950 in Ypsilanti, Michigan, son of Donald and Margaret Brooks. He was raised in the Belleville area where he also attended high school, and later went to the University of Michigan for an engineering degree.
He joined the military in 1970, and became a medic with the special forces.
Joseph’s marriage to Terry Soja lasted from 1977 to 2003. They had four children together, which were his pride and joy. He was a family man and worked hard to earn a living as a Detroit paramedic, and then by starting a heating and air conditioning business closer to home.
In 2005 he met Susan Jennings in California, while she was visiting her family there. He moved to Alaska in 2006, courted Susan for two years, and became an active part of her church at Whitestone Farms. He loved being involved there in whatever way possible, and was instrumental in initiating an EMS program at the farm.
In 2008 Joseph & Susan married. Joseph treated Susan’s three daughters as his own, and loved nurturing, camping, and playing games with the seven grandchildren that came along. Joseph and Susan started Delta Toyo and Heating Service in Delta Junction, and also owned and managed rental properties together. In December 2014, Joseph was diagnosed with cancer. He and Susan returned to Delta this August, following two months of successful cancer treatments in Seattle, before the Lord called him home.
Joseph will be missed for his sharp mind, problem solving skills, interest in others, and hunger for learning and truth. He is survived by his wife Susan Brooks; mother Margaret Schultz, daughter Kristina & Chris, daughter Jessica & Bryan, sons Joe & Jeff Brooks; brothers Don & Brad, sisters Susan & Paula; wife Susan’s children; daughter Christi with husband Jackson Cole, and their children Olivia, Kerris, & Jenna; daughter Lisa with husband Aaron Baranoski, and their children Corin, Sierra, Kendra, & Aiden; daughter Laura Jennings, and numerous other dear family members.
A memorial service for family and friends, will be held at Whitestone Farms on Sunday September 18, 2016, at 2:00 PM.
