Speed limit is now 60 MPH from Fairbanks to North Pole, 65 MPH from North Pole to Eielson.
(FAIRBANKS, Alaska) – Today, the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (ADOT&PF) increased the speed limit on the Richardson Highway from Eielson Air Force Base to Fairbanks. Previously, the route was 55 MPH.
From Fairbanks, south to North Pole, the speed limit increased to 60 MPH. From North Pole, south to Eielson, the speed limit increased to 65 MPH. The lower speed from Fairbanks to North Pole is due to observed driver behavior, increased traffic volumes, numerous higher volume intersections, and two at-grade railroad crossings. The speed limit drops to 45 MPH just before the Airport Way/Gaffney Road/Steese Expressway intersection.
Speed limits are set for ideal conditions. Drivers should always drive for the current conditions; if roads are slippery or visibility is poor, drivers should travel under the speed limit. To check current conditions, visit 511.Alaska.Gov or call 511.
