Monday, February 15th was a red-letter day in Delta! Valentine’s Day had passed, and DHS was closed for President’s Day, but the middle school library was lighted and aglow with the erudite scholarship of six young folks vying for tuition prize monies.
It was the American Legion’s sixth annual oratorical contest, and the contestants presented a learned program of ten minute orations about the United States Constitution and amendments.
All six young orators left with some scholarship dollars, and two of the competitors will now be sent to Anchorage to compete in a state-level oratory contest with peers, and opportunity to win more scholarship monies.
Mercedes Ronnander took first place, however, going to Anchorage for that event later this month with all expenses paid, will be Thomas Warren and Avril Richter.
This speech competition is presented annually by the local American Legion Post 22 and Veteran’s Alliance. It is a delight to watch these young folks who have researched the material and arranged it in a speech.
If you missed it, try to attend next year, and meanwhile, support your vets, troops and wonderful student body.
