JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, Alaska – The 962 Airborne Air Control Squadron will host a ceremony at Heritage Park on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson Sept. 22 at 9:45 a.m. to honor the 20th anniversary of the Yukla 27 crash.
Yukla 27 was the first and only Boeing E-3B Sentry Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) to suffer a fatal crash; brought down by a flock of geese that damaged the engines on take-off.
The event will include guest speaker, Air Force Col. Jay Bickley (a member of the squadron at the time of the accident) and will be attended by several distinguished guests.
A number of Yukla 27 families will bury a time capsule after the memorial ceremony. Any footage of the time capsule will need to be captured prior to the event.
