My parents Russell and Joan Talvi homesteaded in Delta in the late 1950’s at mile post 1415.6. My father served as the treasurer of the Delta Chamber of Commerce in the early 1960’s. We lived in Delta until 1967 and then moved to Fairbanks. We created an LLC several years ago that owns the original 160 acre family homestead, because my parents wanted to transfer the property to my siblings and I in a form that would keep the parcel intact and allow us and future genera-tions to enjoy Delta and our homesteader roots.
After graduating from UAF in 1985, with a BA in Biology and Minor in Economics, wife Paige and I moved to Juneau in 1986. I worked for Senator Bettye Fahrenkamp in both Fairbanks and Juneau for several years. In 1990, we moved to Kauai, Hawaii. While on Kauai I was the President and General Manager of Gaylord’s Restaurant and Luau Kilohana and the Managing Member of the Hukilau Lanai Restaurant. We sold our family owned restaurants in 2010 and 2011 and I returned to Fairbanks in February 2012.
In 2003,my wife Paige, brother Randy and his wife Lia and I purchased a former cannery site in Prince William Sound which we have built into and now operate as a remote lodge from June – July each sum-mer. www.portashtonlodge.com
I have been the Director of the Fairbanks office of the Alaska Small Business Development Center since December 2012. The mission of the AKSBDC is to advance small business in the State of Alaska. We primarily do this by providing confidential, not cost, one on one business advising to business owners.
For 25 plus years I have owned and operated hospitality and resort businesses. My goal is to share what I’ve learned the hard way with other business owners so they can avoid or minimize the challenges that every business faces as they run their unique business and move through the business life cycle, think, launch, grow, reinvent, exit.
