The Delta Imagination Library would like to thank the Delta Community Library for hosting the annual Night Before Christmas PJ Party on Friday, December 5, 2014. This year more than 30 youngsters and their parents participated in the event. Coloring, Christmas caroling, cookie decorating and a reading of ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas by Librarian, Joyce McCombs, were followed by a surprise visit from Santa, who brought gifts and treats for all the children.
The Delta Imagination Library deeply appreciates everyone in the Delta/Greely community who has supported this early literacy program. Our most enthusiastic sponsors have been Library Director, Joyce McCombs, and The Delta Library Association. From the beginning, Joyce has encouraged the Imagination Library Board to grow the program for children in the Delta area. The Library Association is our non-profit sponsor and fiscal agent. Other area individuals businesses who have supported the Imagination Library with in kind donations are the City of Delta Junction, Delta Industrial Services. The Delta News Web, Delta Wind, IGA Food Cache, our local high school radio station, KDHS, Mary Corcoran and families of the board members. The success of the program also depends greatly on the staff of the Delta Junction and Fort Greely Post Offices for distributing the many books that arrive each month.
Financial support also comes from The Alaska Flour Company, Alaska Power and Environmental, Aurora Aviation, Best Beginnings, Buffalo Center Drive In, Delta Building Supply, Family Medical Center, GVEA Good Cents Program, Heritage General Contractors, IGA Food Cache , Kelly’s Country Inn, Mt. Hayes Realty, POGO Mine, Raven Correspondence School, State of Alaska; Commerce, Community and Economic Development Grants to Municipalities; Senator Click Bishop and staff, Ward Farms and all the members of the community who generously supported our bake sales and put change into our donation bins.
The Delta Imagination Library is beginning its fourth year serving the children of the Delta Junction – Fort Greely community. As of today, 231 young readers are enrolled and receive books monthly by mail at no cost to their families. There have been 81 graduates from the program – one of the few hard things about turning 5 years old! Over 1 million books have been mailed to children in 33 communities within the state of Alaska.
