Gin Gin 200 sled dog race (a race John Schandelmeier and Zoya DeNure have hosted since 2005) is kicking off Jan 02! They are encouraging locals to come down to the start! They can always use more hands at the start.
A few facts about the Gin Gin..
1- Zoya started this race in 2005 as an all womens dog race , it was a 120 miles with an 8 hr break in middle.
2- In 2007, John and Zoya made it an Iditarod qualifier and they upped it to a 200 miles and at that time they also allowed men to enter and they made divisions for men/women.
3- Gin Gin was a special husky in John and Zoya’s kennel – she was in John’s winning Yukon Quest teams and is the great grandmother to their own dog breedings. She was tough and enduring…much like the Gin Gin race and it’s mushers.
4- The Gin Gin 200 is a well known sled dog race that attracts mushers globally.
This year they will have a musher coming from Sweden. Several Iditarod and Yukon quest champions have entered the Gin Gin 200
5- John and Zoya have organized and hosted this race since 2005 with minimal help.
They are very proud of this dog and musher friendly dog race, where dog care is #1.
You can contact John and Zoya at (907)388-6039 if you are interested in race participation or volunteering.
Delta’s own local distant/Iditarod musher, Zoya DeNure, will be competing in the Gin Gin 200. 1st dog race of the season.
