Ruth Abbot won the 2014 Alaska State Blueberry Pie Championship(for the 3rd time!) and has a beautifully engraved Goldpan and $50 cash to prove it!
Five pies were entered in this year’s contest. According to the judges, Sherman Stebbins, Cathy Cotton and Linda Nebeker, each of those pies was a pleasure to sample, but the winning confection was clearly outstanding. There was a variety of pies entered, all of which met the requirements of the competition. One pie was gluten-free; one pie was made with a prebaked pie shell; one pie had half the berries uncooked, others were baked with a traditional top and bottom. All were made with our wonderful local blueberries, and all were auctioned off to be enjoyed by the various purchasers.
Thanks are in order to our brave and stalwart judges who were precise, thorough, cheerful and speedy. Thanks to Jeannie Bruce who assisted receiving and entering the pies and then was an assistant to the judges. Thanks to Wayne Crowson for auctioning the pies (and very special thanks to those who bought them!) But the biggest thanks of all is owed to those ladies who took the time to pick the berries, bake the pies, and bring them to the Fair.
A challenge is now on the table to everyone to make next year’s Alaska State Blueberry Pie Championship Contest a spectacular event. You can start right now to ensure you are a contender! The first step is to get out there and pick those berries –and freeze some just in case you are short on berries next Fair-time. For those of you who are not yet skilled in the art of pie baking, keep your eyes open because next summer a pie crust class will be taught by past Champion Ann Mauer in plenty of time for you to learn and practice everything you need to know to make a perfect pie. We’ll see you at the Fair next year!
