Washington, D.C. – Alaskan Congressman Don Young today shared the following message to commemorate Independence Day:
“238 years ago, our Founding Fathers signed a document that would forever change the fate of the free world. These patriots defied the world’s foremost military power, choosing to establish a nation based upon individual liberties and freedom rather than accept absolute tyranny and noble authority. Together, through service and sacrifice to a cause much greater than their own, these brave Americans formed a republic governed by farmers, merchants, scientists, and servicemen.
“From 1776 until now, the United States has grown in many capacities, but its basic principles have endured. Our country remains the shining city upon the hill, the defender of freedom worldwide, and as citizens of this great nation, we understand that we have individual responsibilities to ensure that future generations enjoy the rights granted by our forefathers.
“As we celebrate the Fourth of July, let us remember the countless sacrifices of those before us and the resolve they showed in defense of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. I hope that on this day of America’s birth, all Alaskans and Americans alike take a moment to reflect on this great nation and the principles it stands for. I wish everyone a wonderful Independence Day, one filled with the love of family, friends, and country.”
