The Delta/Greely School Board unanimously adopted the new Common Core Math Book Curriculum grades 6-12. No public comment was allowed. Not one board member spoke up in opposition and there was also no discussion. This is not insignificant; this is profound. All the warnings, sharing of information, and concerns from the public that have been ongoing since last summer have fallen on deaf ears. It does not matter whether it was one person or a thousand who brought this to their attention, the facts were presented and they were obviously ignored or not taken seriously. Either way, it is a reflection on each and every board member.
Indiana and Oklahoma have just recently taken a stand against Common Core and removed it from their State. Alaska does not have to wait for the state government that got us into Common Core to get us out. Alaska School Boards have local control. All they need to do is start using it and say “No” to Common Core. That takes leadership we currently do not seem to have. Perhaps this can be remedied in the future school board elections starting this fall.
