FORT WAINWRIGHT, Alaska – The snowboarding and skiing season is winding down but not before the blow-out at Birch Hill Ski and Snowboard Area March 28 through 30. March Madness will feature competitions and games for the whole family Saturday and Sunday from noon to 7:30 p.m. Visitors without an installation pass will need to stop by the visitor’s center and show a driver’s license, vehicle registration and proof of insurance.
Friday, March 28, is Military Appreciation Day. Active duty military personnel in uniform ski free from noon to 4 p.m. A Defense Department ID card is required. Registration for events like the military sled-making and racing competitions is available by calling 353-1998. Friday’s sled competition begins at 1:30 p.m. Activities and races continue daily until 7:30 p.m. Sign up closes 30 minutes before competition starts.
Saturday’s Family Day events include a sled-building competition with points awarded for things like creativity and realism. Sled-building teams are also invited to dress up and show team spirit. There will be prizes awarded. Free access to the lift and tubing hill ends at 2 p.m. Saturday. The rail jam is slated to start at 4 p.m.
Sunday’s events cap the weekend with slalom downhill races from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. The Birch Hill pool hop starts at 4 p.m. where skiers and snowboarders attempt to skim the surface of the pond, followed by the polar plunge where participants purposely take a dip in the frigid water. A bonfire and s’mores will immediately follow.
Remember, festivities are open to the public but those without a Defense Department ID are required to stop at the main gate visitor’s center to show a driver’s license, proof of insurance and vehicle registration to obtain an installation pass.
