Alaska Children’s Trust (ACT) is proud to present the 2013 Champion for Kids award to Margo McCabe. The Champion for Kids award recognizes individuals who have strived to ensure Alaska’s children grow-up in supportive and nurturing communities. Throughout Margo’s life, she helped others – particularly children. As an individual who was adopted, Margo made it a personal mission to advocate for children which has earned her the highest respect across the state. For nearly 10 years, Margo was instrumental in providing leadership to ACT. In her everyday life, Margo consistently exhibited the characteristics of a champion for kids. She continually volunteered for youth programs and served as a court-appointed special advocate (CASA) for foster children in Alaska. Plus, she and her husband were actively involved in the lives of their four children. Margo helped ACT and our state develop systems that ensured Alaska’s children live in safe and supportive communities. Margo will always be an inspiration to us all.
The award was presented to Margo in January in Houston, Texas, where she was being treated for cancer, with her father Vince, husband Trevor, and children Mollie, Lauren, Sarah and Robert. Margo passed away on 7 February 2014. The family asked for donations to be made in Margo’s memory Melanoma Research Foundation (www.melanoma.org) or Alaska Children’s Trust (www.alaskachildrenstrust.org).
The Alaska Children’s Trust improves the status of children in Alaska by generating funds and committing resources to eliminate child abuse and neglect. Established in 1997, ACT has granted over $4 million dollars to organizations across the State of Alaska to prevent child abuse and neglect.
