Fort Greely, Alaska – The Department of Energy National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) is conducting an exercise at the U.S. Army’s Cold Regions Test Center from February to April 2014.
DOE/NNSA has developed equipment and teams of scientists and engineers that can safely handle and recover various forms of nuclear materials outside the United States. The purpose of the exercise is to demonstrate the ability to deploy DOE/NNSA equipment and teams to a cold, snowy environment; set up equipment to meet facility safety requirements; and use mock materials to simulate anticipated physical properties of nuclear materials to test the equipment, procedures, and operations.
The entire exercise will last for approximately eight weeks. No actual special nuclear material is used during the exercise and there is no chance of any radioactive contamination occurring.
For questions regarding this exercise please contact U.S. Army Cold Regions Test Center Technical Editor, Clara Zachgo, at 873-7371.
