This year’s Christmas Bird Count is coming up soon and will be held on Saturday, January 4th.
The CBC is an annual bird survey sponsored by the National Audubon Society that has been conducted for over 100 years.
There are more than 2,000 count areas in countries throughout the Western Hemisphere and over 70,000 people participate annually. All the surveys are conducted within a couple weeks either side of Christmas.
The purpose of the count is to determine winter distribution of birds and their relative population trends over the years. Results inform bird conservation efforts.
As you probably know, there is not a wide variety of species that spend the winter in the Delta area so you don’t have to be an expert at bird identification to participate. Folks can survey a specific route or area in Delta or can just keep track of birds at their feeder.
