Alaska Receives Grant from Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to Help Lead Efforts to Transform Health Care through Nursing
ANCHORAGE, AK – The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) announced that the Alaska Nursing Action Coalition (ANAC) will be part of a $4.5 million initiative, the Future of Nursing State Implementation Program. The program is helping states prepare the nursing profession to address our nation’s most pressing health care challenges—access, quality, and cost. RWJF announced ten states that are joining the program this month; it launched with 20 states in February.
The State Implementation Program bolsters efforts already underway in 50 states and the District of Columbia—the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action—to improve health and health care through nursing. A joint initiative of AARP and RWJF, the Campaign is working to implement the Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) evidence-based recommendations on the future of nursing. It provides a vehicle for nurses at all levels to lead system change to improve care for patients and families through collaboration with business, consumer, and other health professional organizations.
The Alaska Nursing Action Coalition’s RWJF State Implementation Program grant is for $150,000 over two years. The Rasmuson Foundation, a private family foundation based in Alaska, provided the required 50 percent match.
“The ANAC will use this grant to focus on leadership, diversity, and scope of practice within Alaska’s nursing community by engaging with nurses across the state through mentoring programs and a leadership academy,” said Patricia Dooley, ANAC’s steering committee co-lead. “Ultimately, we will establish the Alaska Center for Nursing Excellence, which will serve as a virtual catalyst for growth and excellence in the profession of nursing.”
“We are confident that this grant will help spur progress in Alaska, which already is doing notable work to transform nursing practice, education, and leadership,” said Susan B. Hassmiller, PhD, RN, FAAN, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation senior adviser for nursing and director of the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action. “The Foundation is committed to helping states build a more highly educated, diverse nursing workforce so that everyone in America can live a healthier life, supported by a system in which nurses are essential partners in providing care and promoting health.”
In addition to Alaska, grants were announced in Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Minnesota, Nevada, Ohio, South Carolina, Vermont, and Virginia.
The 20 states that received grants in February 2013 are: Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Utah, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.
