Memorial Day observance 2013 in Delta Junction– The Delta Junction Veterans Alliance, spearheaded by American Legion Post 22, again presented the annual Memorial Day observance at Resthaven Cemetery on Monday under sunny skies and amid somber thoughts. Local Cub Scouts in uniform welcomed participants and spectators, distributing flags and poppies.
Promptly at noon, Legion Commander and master of ceremony Rick Tirrell called the assemblage to attention, as young men from Boy Scout Troops 56 and 11 presented the colors in close order drill formation. That ceremony was followed by Miss Victoria Joslin fervently delivering the National Anthem, and Chaplain (Major) Palmer from Fort Greely offering a prayer for fallen heroes and those left behind.

Mrs. Marge Bandy, as she has in past observances, recited the traditional poem In Flanders Field, and Judith Farrow spoke and read Memorial Day poetry dear to her. Girl Scouts sang My Country ‘Tis of Thee and John Warren sang Amazing Grace.
The pinnacle of annual presentation is the recitation of names of local veterans and the arm of their service who deceased in 2013, accompanied by the somber tolling of a bronze bell for each name. Twelve reflective, bleak, depressing minutes reminding us of service, duty, and patriotism.

Thus ended this day of remembrance. Heartfelt thanks to the veterans organizations in Delta, and the veterans who are members–and to the young folks who contributed, those presently serving, and all who came together this day to remember.
