FORT WAINWRIGHT, Alaska. – A Medical Department Activity – Alaska (MEDDAC-AK) Soldier died Monday morning after he collapsed during physical training at Melaven Gym here.
Army Sgt. 1st Class Bryan H. Hays, 40, who was born in Bossier, La., entered active-duty service in May 1999 as a combat medic and most recently served as the noncommissioned officer in charge of emergency services at Bassett Army Community Hospital.
Hays was treated on scene and transported to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Hays deployed to Iraq for 12 months in 2004 and again for 15 months, 2006-2008.
Hays awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, three Army Commendation Medals, three Army Achievement Medals, a Joint Meritorious Unit Award, 2 Iraqi Campaign Medals, a Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, a Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, one Army Service Ribbon, four Overseas Service Ribbons, the Expert Field Medical Badge and the Combat Medical Badge.
A memorial Service for Hays will be held at Southern Lights Chapel on Ft. Wainwright Friday at 5 p.m.
