Winfred F. Barr, formerly of Delta Junction, AK died Monday, July 30, 2012 at Wake Forrest Medical Center. A private graveside service was held in West Jefferson, NC where he was buried beside his father and Mother. “Wint” , as he was known, was born Sept 10, 1926 in Ashe County, NC to the late Basil D. Barr and Mabel Phillips Barr.
After a stint in the Navy during WWII, Wint visited his father who was a MAJ in the Army at Ladd Field (now Ft. Wainwright) in 1948. It was shortly after that he decided Alaska was in his blood and moved his family up in May of 1954. He worked on Fort Greely for 30 years before retiring. His love for the State and his adventurous lifestyle led him to eventually becoming a big game hunter and guide in the Alaskan interior. He became good friends with renown guide Slim Moore and Dave Lanni and went on many hunts with both of them. He loved to fly and had many adventures with his “Ace” pilot buddy, Art Smith of Delta Junction. He was always willing to share his tales of bear encounters, big game hunts, fishing, airplane crashes and the “real” Alaskan way of life!!
