Carlene W Smith of Delta Junction crossed her next horizon monday morning, July 7, 2008 at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital.Carlene W. Smith entered this world on October 14, 1933 Stringtown Oklahoma. She attended public schools in Oklahoma and Missouri. In 1952 she married Sgt. James R. Smith in El Paso, Texas. She lived on or near Ft. Riley, Kansas, Ft. Jackson, South Carolina, Ft. Eustis, Virginia and three years in Mannheim, West Germany before her husband left the U. S. Army in 1959. Subsequently she traveled all over the U.S., as well as visits to Mexico, Canada, Japan, and lived two years in South Korea. Finally fulfilling a life long dream and moving to Delta Junction, Alaska in October 1992.
She was an accomplished artist, writer and professional photographer selling photos to text book and magazine publisher’s world wide.
She started her working life as a cocktail waitress at 16. Moving on to a TV/Radio Copywriter, bookkeeper, and her longest career raising children which she did for forty years. Besides raising her three sons, she raised two granddaughters, a nephew and two “foundlings”.
She accumulated four years of College education while taking care of her sons, but never got a degree since she enjoyed learning more than a paper degree. Carlene was an avid reader of mysteries, history and anything that widened her horizons. She has now crossed her last horizon to see what’s beyond.
Although self-described as “anti-military” she supported her husband going to Korean War, her eldest son to Vietnam War, middle son and eldest granddaughter to the Marines and youngest son to the Army. Her father served in the Oklahoma National Guard during the Depression, her uncle served in the Marines during WW II and Korea, and her two brothers served in the Navy.
Services will be conducted at 2Pm Saturday, July 12th at the Delta/Clearwater Moose Family Center on Jack Warren Rd. With internment at Rest Haven Cemetary following service. Reception at The Lodge afterwards.
